6 weeks after the accident

“You know, I might miss Pirate Maverick once the eye patch comes off.”

Maverick half-heartedly answers his girlfriend Harlow, “yeah.”

“Maybe you can start physical therapy and we can get you back on your feet again!”

“Great.”

Harlow helps Maverick into his wheelchair and pushes him into his doctor’s office.

Harlow sighs, she misses the Maverick she met two years before his accident.

She knows deep down that that part of him is still there and will come back with time.

And she is willing to be here to help him find himself again.

Harlow assists Maverick back into the car after his appointment and starts to drive.

“How about we go to the park and get some lunch,” Harlow suggests.

“As long as that taco truck is there today.”

She looks over the Maverick, seeing a small spark of his old self coming out.

“It’s Tuesday so it should.”

Harlow pushes Maverick along the paved trail of the park to find the food truck.

She sets up lunch at a picnic table in I a shady spot, so Maverick is out of direct light.

She sees that Maverick hasn’t touched his food yet.

Harlow knows just where his mind is, where his mind always goes after an appointment.

Harlow grabs both of Maverick’s hands, careful of the one still in a hard cast.

“I know you lost so much but you did your job, what you’ve been training for and because of that ten men are alive today because of you.”

Maverick nods his head and forces himself back to the here and now, so thankful for that girl.

They eat in silence, enjoying the fresh air and the warm spring day.

Maverick glances up at Harlow who flashes a mischievous smile, she has something planned.

“How about we go on an adventure today?”
