Gratitude

I have started a new challenge for myself. For the month of May, I will be using this word prompt as my guide.

Gratitude

Maverick stops at the corner of Main Street and Kenmore Street.

He shoves his hands into the pockets of his jeans as he glances both ways, searching.

Maverick taps his boot on the sidewalk feeling like he just can’t stand still.

He takes his phone out of his pocket and lights up the screen to check the time again and again.

He hears someone coming on his left and picks his head up, flashing a big toothy smile.

Disappointment washes over Maverick when he sees it’s not who he is looking for.

Maverick whispers under his breath, “come on, where are you?”

He takes a hand, rubs his face and reopens his light brown eyes.

Maverick starts to scan the growing crowds.

Hoping to find her heading his way.

He checks his phone again.

Maybe she will show.

Maybe.

She will be here.

Maverick leans up against the nearby brick building, hoping his friends were wrong about her.

His friends have to be wrong about her, she has to prove them all wrong by showing up.

A steady rain begins to fall and everyone ducks into the buildings to wait out the sudden storm.

Maverick could care less about how it quickly soaks all of his clothes.

How could she do this to him after all they’ve been through?

Cold, wet, and feeling utter disappointment he forces himself to leave his post on the corner.

Feeling abandoned by the girl he always felt gratitude towards for being there for him.
